Red Buttons: Stars
built 635 days ago
Red Buttons was a lot more than just a super-talented comedian with a rapid-fire wit. He was ... a world-class entertainer, a genuine Hollywood star and celebrity, and a very warm human being who liked to help others and encourage all young talented artists and actors to do their best.
Sayonara stars James Garner (from L-R), Marlon Brando, Academy Award winners Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki. After a sensational first season, The Red Buttons Show began to slide. Reports circulated that the star had fits of temper and fired writers right and left, and the show ended after three seasons.

Actor José Ferrer noticed Mr. Buttons and brought him to the legitimate theater in a short-lived 1942 farce called "Vickie." Soon after, he won a part in Moss Hart's "Winged Victory," which starred servicemen entertainers and was designed to sell war bonds. In the Marine Corps at the time, Mr. Buttons was billed as Pvt. Buttons. He went to Hollywood in 1944 for the film version of "Winged Victory" and continued to tour in the play.
Buttons ... starred in a short-lived sitcom, 1966's "The Double Life of Henry Phyfe." He was widely appreciated for the numerous appearances he made on the Dean Martin roasts, where he delivered his tongue-in-cheek, "I Never Got a Dinner" routine.
