Henri Durand, the former Jordan technical director, has reappeared in racing in the United States as the technical director of Red Bull Cheever Racing in the Indy Racing League. Durand had been in Formula 1 for more than 20 years, starting out as an aerodynamicist at Ligier before being recruited by Ferrari in 1987. He worked with John Barnard to design the famous 640 chassis but after Barnard departed Durand moved on an joined McLaren, replacing Mike Gascoyne as the head of the aerodynamic team in the middle of 1990. He stayed with the Woking team until the end of 2000 when he moved to Prost Grand Prix to be technical director. After the team ran out of money he moved to Jordan in a similar role in 2002 and 2003. Having dropped from the racing scene for much of 2004 Durand was put into contact with Cheever through the Mecachrome organization which is working in partnership with Cheever and has since taken up residence in Indianapolis.

Red Bull established Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2006 by buying the Minardi team. This followed the purchase of Jaguar to become Red Bull Racing the previous year. In 2006, Team Red Bull debuted in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The team, with Bill Elliott, failed to qualify for the race and the team didn't qualify for the two subsequent races they attempted with A.J. Allmendinger. The Red Bull-owned 2-car operation debuted on the full-time circuit in 2007 under the Toyota banner. Both cars, Allmendinger in the #84 and Brian Vickers in the #83, failed to qualify for the Daytona 500. Vickers... qualified for the race in California Speedway and posted the team's, and Toyota's, first top-10 in Nextel Cup competition.
In August 2002, Rice had his first race in the IRL for Red Bull Cheever Racing at Michigan International Speedway. Hired initially to replace crash-prone Tomas Scheckter, Team owner Eddie Cheever discovered that Scheckter's contract was more iron-clad than first thought. Team Cheever then ran three entries (joined by their team owner), and the best crew and parts were given to Rice. Rice lost the race by inches to Scheckter, but made a mark in the series. He competed in the final five races of the IRL IndyCar Series season with Red Bull Cheever Racing, scoring four top-10 finishes and two top-five finishes in five starts.

In addition to sports sponsorships, Red Bull has developed the MET (Mobile Energy Team) program. The teams consist of mostly college students, who drive specially designed Red Bull "Racers". The racers are detailed with the Red Bull logo, and most carry an oversized can of Red Bull on their chassis (Suzuki Vitara, MiniCooper, SportTrac, etc.). The METs complete daily missions that include sporting events, businesses, colleges, shopping centers, etc. The Mobile Energy Team is trained to know the properties of the energy drink thoroughly and present them to consumers in a one on one quality interaction.
Red Bull Dragsterday will require more than just clever engineering and speed. The teams will ... be judged on the creativity of their construction and the power of their presentation. Based on individual pre-qualifying runs, the drivers will be placed in single-elimination duels to work their way up through (or out of) brackets until the two fastest vehicles remain. However, what a team lacks in engineering wizardry may be made up for in the imaginative style of their design (which, come to think of it, doesn't even have to look like a car). With entries including "Pedaljet," "Horse-Drawn Dragster," "Rodent Racer," and the "Pope Mobile," it's evident that this contest is all about the complete package.
