While the market for recreational vehicles has been soft recently, Thor Industries seems to be driving ahead of the pack. The Jackson Center, OH-based company said late Wednesday that the number of orders the company received in November rose 19.0% from the same month last year. reported that its backlog reached $475.0 million compared with $399.0 million in 2006. RV backlog jumped 23.0% to $238.0 million, and bus backlog was $237.0 million reflecting a 15% increase.Thor produces and sells recreational vehicles and small to mid-sized buses. There were 320,800 new recreational vehicles manufactured in 2003 in the United States, valued at $12.1B, according to statistics reported by the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association with growth rates estimated to be 2-3% annually. In addition, RVIA reports, there are more than 7.2 million registered RVs already in use in the United States today. Including the number of enthusiasts and renters, the number of RV users exceeds 30 million.

It is unfortunate, sometimes tragically so, that the number of safe, recreational areas to ride ATVs lags behind the number of these vehicles sold. If skateparks can be built to keep skateboarders from putting themselves and others in harm's way on the roads, it would seem that ATV parks could be created in some of the bigger state and county parks to offer safe riding areas.
