Rebecca Lobo: Teams
built 641 days ago
Like Rebecca Lobo, the Florida football team practicing on a humid summer afternoon is working hard. Their body chemistry converts the carbohydrates and fats and proteins to energy and heat and water, carbon dioxide and urea. Lots of energy. Lots of heat. Plenty of water. As they breathe, the water and carbon dioxide they exhale helps to cool them.
"I've had to adjust my goals as the season has gone along," Lobo admits. "Instead of saying 'I want to help this team in 20 minutes a game,' now it's, 'Whenever I'm called on, I have to be ready.'"
Frankly, the WNBA is fortunate Lobo doesn't pack an attitude. It didn't take league officials long to recognize that the soft-spoken farm girl from Southwick, Mass., is an exceptional talent on the court and a promoter's dream off it: She was the best player on a college team -- situated between media market giants New York and Boston -- that captured the country's imagination with its 35-0 national championship season in 1995.
