Rebecca Lobo: Lady Huskies
built 641 days ago
Rebecca Lobo As an academically and athletically gifted student, the six-foot, four-inch Lobo was recruited by one-hundred different colleges. She chose to enter the University of Connecticut because it was fairly close to home and the program encouraged athletes to take their academic work seriously. Her first two seasons with the Huskies women's basketball team were tension-filled... as Lobo adjusted to the coaching style of Geno Auriemma. At one point in her sophomore season, Auriemma and Lobo actually stopped speaking to one another outside of practice. After a series of heart-to-heart talks, the two managed to work out their differences. Lobo had not realized that Coach Auriemma's criticism of her playing was a sign that he believed that she was not reaching her full potential as an all-around player.

(AP Photo/Mark Duncan) Lobo drew an emotional standing ovation from the partisan crowd of 2,829 when she was introduced during warmups. But one look around and it is evident how much the Lady Huskies have impacted the women's pro game. Kara Wolters, Rizzotti, and Carla Berube all play for the Blizzard, who began play last season. UConn coach Geno Auriemma was doing commentary for the practice WNBA broadcast.

Ms. Lobo's accomplishments on the basketball court are well known. On her way to leading the Huskies to an undefeated season and national championship, Lobo averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds, 3.5 blocked shots and 3.7 assists per game. She was named a first team All-American and the national player of the year, and, despite having to sit out much of the first half with three fouls, sparked the dramatic second half come-from-behind victory over Tennessee in the NCAA championship game.

Lobo attended the University of Connecticut and helped lead the Huskies to the 1995 National Championship with an undefeated 35-0 record. In her senior year, she won the 1995 Naismith and College Player of the Year award.
It was a hugely satisfying comeback for the Huskies, for a couple sitting in section 129 and for Becca Lobo. The fans cheered, the band blasted, and the team zealously cut down the nets.
