Rebates: Checks
built 281 days ago
New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman (R) urged state lawmakers on Tuesday to enact her plan for offering property tax rebates to homeowners by April 15 so that homeowners can receive their first checks by Labor Day. The five-year, $1 billion proposal would provide average rebates of $120 to homeowners in its first year and $600 in rebates by the last year of the program. Whitman said the key to the plan is for the state legislature to act with fiscal discipline and make sure that the property tax rebates are their top priority for the year. New Jersey currently has the highest property taxes in the nation, and Whitman only narrowly won her 1997 re-election bid after voters said she hadn't done enough to lower property taxes. Most lawmakers supported the plan, although some were concerned about financial implications and offering the rebates to the state's wealthiest residents.

All Ameren Illinois utility electricity customers have been issued rebates in the form of checks or bill credits. Customers with past due amounts of less than 60 days were issued a check by mail. Customers with past due amounts of more than 60 days had a credit applied to their account.
Surprisingly, very few of those rebates are actually mailed in (less than 5%, in fact!). Then, weeks pass and the consumer receives either a check or a rejection notice (or no notice at all!). By the time the rebate check is due, most people have either forgotten about the purchase altogether or have lost track of the relevant contact information and have no way to follow up. Literally, millions of dollars remain unclaimed each year!
WASHINGTON (AP) - Congress, facing the prospect of an election-year recession, passed an emergency plan that rushes rebates of $600 to $1,200 to most taxpayers and $300 checks to disabled veterans, the elderly and other low-income people. President Bush indicated he would sign the measure.
Southern California residents may be eligible for rebates from local water providers on the following items. Not all rebate programs are available in all areas. Check with your local water provider to learn more about program eligibility.
