In 1926, Reading won Division Three (south) and the following season had their best FA Cup run, reaching the semi-finals where they lost to eventual winners Cardiff City. Reading were relegated in 1931 and became a founding member of the national Division Three in 1957, where they remained until their centenary year.

Standards in basic math and reading among 7–year–olds in England showed no improvement this year while fewer reached the expected writing skills for the second year running. Although there are no government targets for 7–year–olds, the results call into question the improvements in primary schools ministers claim to have brought about by introducing policies such the literacy and numeracy hours. After being a teacher for 15 years, Judy Pray thought she had seen it all, but then she met a first-grader with reading difficulties the two of them couldn’t overcome. The winning projects for this year's Youth Leaders for Literacy (YLL) grant competition to put reading on the map are diverse and creative. With more than 200 entries, 30 have been selected to receive a cash grant of $500, for a total of $15,000 in cash awards. The winning youth-led initiatives will launch on March 3, NEA's Read Across America Day, and will culminate during Youth Service America's Global Youth Service Days, April 25-27, 2008. DETROIT, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Detroit Area Business Activity Index rebounded to 109 in July, up 4 points from June and its highest reading since March. Even so, the latest reading is down about 2 1/2 percent from last July. So far this year, the Detroit index has averaged about 3 percent less than it did in 2005.

NEW YORK, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Mortgage rates declined for the seventh time in the last eight weeks, aided by last week's better-than- expected reading on the Consumer Price Index. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage fell to 6.48 percent, the lowest since March 29.
