Hosted by Henry Winkler, who has had his own struggles with reading, Reading and the Brain explores how brain scientists are working to solve the puzzle of why some children struggle to read and others don't. To participate in the program, troops can visit participating USO centers to be taped reading a children's book. A copy of the book, DVD and instructions, as well as information on United Through Reading, are mailed to the child and family back home. The USO supplies recording equipment, books and packaging materials. The parent or caregiver at home is encouraged to share the child's excitement by photographing or videotaping the child as the child is watching the DVD and following along with the book. The photograph or DVD can then be sent to the deployed family member, boosting the morale of the entire family and enhancing the feeling of connectedness.

When researchers studied language and reading development for a group of children who started in 2002-2003, this group improved their reading skills considerably, moving up an average of 15 percentiles by the end of the year. The problem is that as these children proceed through the elementary grades their reading scores decline steadily. By third grade almost all the initial benefits of FDK disappear.
