Rayman Advance

Rayman Advance is a port of the original Rayman side-scrolling platformer which was released on multiple consoles including the Playstation. When the incorrigible Mr. Dark launches an invasion, Rayman's unsuspecting world takes a turn for disaster. Darkness falls, and with it a scourge of freaks bent on capturing the Toons, precious light-giving sprites vital to the world's harmony. As Rayman, Guardian of the World, you must harness untold powers to face Dark and his twisted minions, free the Toons, and restore balance to the universe. Rayman can run, leap, climb, swing, punch, and use his ears to helicopter around for short distances. There are over 60 levels across six surreal colorful worlds in Rayman Advance, and many boss encounters.

Rayman Advance is a quality title on all accounts, and should be considered by anyone looking for some classic platforming action. It's visuals are nothing short of superb and show off the console better than most of the current launch titles with tried and true gameplay to back them up. Ubi Soft's mascot has ported to Nintendo's next generation handheld with ease, and it shows. A title which comes highly recommended.

Just as Rayman Advance was one of the first new games for the GBA, so too the limbless French wonder has booked a place on the first wave of games on the Nintendo DS. The game is similar in many ways to Mario 64 DS, in that it's a fully 3D adventure played using a faux analogue control system with the stylus. Unlike the Mario game though, Rayman DS is an entirely new game, with 45 different levels which although reminiscent of Rayman 2 on the Nintendo 64 have been specifically designed for the DS. As such you get a pleasingly variety of deep sea caves, pirate hideouts and verdant waterfall-filled coves to explore. Rayman himself has his usual suite of abilities as he runs, jumps, skis, swims and turns his rather strange coiffure into helicopter blades. He can ... fly on rockets, ride in whirlwinds and surf lava flows, which is pretty good for someone who hasnt got any knees.

The graphics in Rayman Advance look fantastic. The developers have succeeded in making the game look almost as good as its PlayStation counterpart. That's a significant achievement for a game on a portable system, even considering that the original Rayman was a first-generation PlayStation game. Its bright colors and clearly defined backgrounds make it well suited for the Game Boy Advance, as opposed to games such as Castlevania: Circle of the Moon and Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, which almost need to be played under direct sunlight in order for you to see what's happening. And while the sound effects in Rayman Advance are merely average, its soundtrack is very catchy. Even though the main theme is overplayed, it really never gets old.

Those of you who have played Rayman Advance may notice some immediate similarities when you start playing Rayman 3. The gameplay is pretty basic and even though you have a full library of moves you don’t do much more than jumping and swinging for the first few levels. But your patience and continued gameplay will soon be rewarded as you venture deeper into this 50-level game.

In Rayman Advance, the lead character consists of a body, a head, two hands and two feet - no arms or legs. Humorous action-adventure/platformer in which the player must jump and climb, and defeat enemies.
