Other, less reliable sources have claimed that after Ray's brother drowned he started to go blind as a case of undiagonosed gluacoma. By the age of seven, he had gone totally blind. He moved to Florida to go to St. Augustine's School for the Deaf and Blind. He learned Braille and how to play a variety of intruments, including the piano. After his ninth year there his mother died (his father followed two years later) and he then decided to move to Seattle, Washington to pursue a promising career as a chocolate man.

Family members say it's yet another slap in the face since Ray's death. Recently Mary Anne den Bok, the mother of Ray's youngest child, Corey, filed court papers accusing Ray's long-time manager, Joe Adams, of denying Corey the financial support Ray intended to provide for him.
