In general, Rave Master is a perfectly average game. Players who wade through the game's early mishmash in hopes that they'll be rewarded with an unusual, engrossing game will be disappointed. Rave Master is a middle-of-the road game. It doesn't do anything badly, and it doesn't do anything particularly well. Even its interesting ideas choked to death on problems like poor writing and clunky, uninspired graphics. The game is perfectly, almost proverbially, meh.

Even if you haven’t checked out the cartoon or read one of the comic books, Rave Master has some pretty interesting characters although it may seem odd for fans to see Haru battle his close friends. Still if you’ve always wondered who would win an Elie-versus-Celia fight, well, here’s your chance. There are ... plenty of stages plus some bonus stages and extra characters to unlock.

-- Rave Master (Anime): A popular animated series that aired on Cartoon Network directed by Takashi Watanabe (Slayers, Lost Universe). Sixteen-year-old Haru Glory has never left the cozy confines of Garage Island. He likes fishing and eating snow cones on the beach -- not exactly the lifestyle of a hero-in-the-making. Meanwhile, in the wider world, the evil society Demon Card is threatening civilization as we know it. When they come to Garage Island, unleash the destructive power of the Dark Bring and start messing with his friends, Haru is forced into action. With the help of a transforming sword and his magical guide Plue, Haru sets out on the most harrowing quest of his young life: to find the five missing RAVE Stones -- which hold the key to victory over the Dark Bring -- and to kick some major Demon Card butt.
The gameplay in Rave Master for the GameCube is surprisingly limited. There are really only two modes of play: Story and VS. Story mode is the same as any other fighting game’s story mode. You choose a character and go through a connected series of battles that form a storyline. For the exposition scenes, Rave Master uses a comic style format. In other words, there isn’t any animation, just static images with text windows. Each character has numerous emotional templates, and the comics simply bring up the appropriate image that fits the tone of the panel.

The biggest problem with Rave Master is, far and beyond, its lack of orginiality. There's nothing original about Haru Glory or Elle right down to the clothes they wear and their stock character designs. They're cute, but don't have much detail.
