Rats: Species
built 802 days ago
Kangaroo Rats are found only in the more arid regions of the western and southwestern U.S. Several species occur in all four southwestern deserts. Many of the 22 occur only in California. Ord's Kangaroo Rat (D. ordii) is the most-wide-ranging and occurs between the Sierra Nevada /Cacscade and Rocky mountains from southern Canada to central Mexico. Two species of the smaller Kangaroo Mouse (genus Microdipodops) occur in the Great Basin Desert.

Familiarity with mice ... plays a role: rats reared with mice tend not to kill mice as adults. Specifically, Galef (1970) found that 67-77% of captive born wild rats kill mice. However, if captive born wild rats are raised with a mouse from weaning to age 3 months, none of them kill the mice they're familiar with. When presented with an unfamiliar mouse, only 7% of the mouse-reared rats killed it.

Their burrows are dark and stuffy places, and naked mole-rats have evolved to survive in these low-oxygen, high-carbon-dioxide environments. Their metabolic rate is less than half that of a typical rodent, and their specially adapted hemoglobin efficiently captures oxygen for the blood stream. A lower metabolism ... may help prevent naked mole-rats from overheating during vigorous digging. Unlike other mammals, naked mole-rats aren’t capable of physiologically regulating their body temperature. They lack sweat glands and have no insulating layer of fat beneath their thin skin. More like reptiles, their body temperature fluctuates with the temperature of their environment.
Once you have built and installed RATS, it's time to start auditing your software! RATS accepts a few command line options that will be described here and accepts a list of files to audit on the command line. If no files to audit are specified, stdin will be used.
Despite the fact that they burrow underground like moles and have rat-like tails, naked mole-rats are in fact neither moles nor rats. The majority of the species referred to as mole-rats belong instead to the family Bathyergidae and are more closely related to porcupines, chinchillas, and guinea pigs than to their namesakes. Thirty-seven other species, such as the Palestine mole-rat (Spalex ehrenbergi), are ... referred to as mole-rats but share only superficial similarities to the Bathyergidae and to one another.
When started, RATS will scan each file specified on the command line and produce a report when scanning is complete. What vulnerabilities are reported in the final report depend on the data contained in the vulnerability database or databases that are used and the warning level in use.
