Most veterinarians are ignorant about rats, so therefore do not treat rats. Some veterinarians are even scornful of rats, asking rat owners why they bother bringing a rat in for treatment when they can just go buy another instead. This makes it very difficult for some rat owners to find proper veterinary care for their pets.

Native Africans have long known of the existence of naked mole-rats, which they call sand puppies. Rarely making appearances above ground, naked mole-rats didn’t capture the attention of Western biologists until the mid-1970s, when pioneering researchers Jennifer Jarvis, now affiliated with the University of Cape Town, Paul Sherman from Cornell University, and Richard Alexander at the University of Michigan uncovered the rodents’ secret societies.

The cage should ideally have several levels with care being taken to avoid long drops from one level to another (this is particularly important for geriatric rats). Covering wire mesh floors/shelves with something like acetate or lino will make them more comfortable for your rats to walk on and easier to clean.

A recent assault on the alleged "safety" of MSG came from a Japanese study where supplements of MSG fed to rats for either 3 months or 6 months damaged the rats' retinas. (Ohguro et al. The rats were coaxed to crawl uphill on an angled plank, and their overall strength was calculated by considering the highest angle to which they could cling for five seconds without sliding backward. While all the rats grew progressively weaker, those injected with live cells did so much more slowly than those injected with dead cells.
