Rats: Peoples

Rats are curious creatures. Rats live all over the world and can adapt to a variety of environments. Some people dislike rats' long tails, but the tails are very important, because they allow rats to be excellent athletes. Using their tails for balance, rats can jump long distances and land on narrow ledges. Rats can balance on ropes, wrapping their tails underneath to help hold them on. Although rats can see, they do not see very well. Instead they rely on their excellent hearing and sense of smell. A rat's whiskers ... help it gather information about the world.

Rats ... pose severe health risks. It was the black rat of East Asia that brought the Black Death (Bubonic Plague) to Europe, killing a third of the population. Plague is still a problem throughout the world today, with annual outbreaks in parts of Africa that kill hundreds of people.
Dumbo rat People breed rats and bring them to shows, just like pedigreed dogs. Judges choose a winner based on standardized rules. Criteria include the rat's color, pattern, size, its health, and its personality. Show rats come in lots of different varieties. Some have extra-large ears, which are placed on the side of the head. This trait is called "Dumbo ears."

Some people keep their rats inside the house while others keep them in outside sheds or garages. Keeping a pet rat indoors is recommended as they may not get the attention they need if they are kept in a garage or a shed. Rats can live in aquariums with a wire or mesh screen top or in wire cages. However aquariums are not recommended as they do not provide adequate ventilation. The larger your rats cage the happier he will be. When looking for a rat cage, look for cages made for rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas or parrots.
Rats are a menace and a worldwide scourge. City people think of them as disgusting creatures that infest sewers and spread disease, and that's true enough, but the real problem is what they eat, especially in farming areas.
Male rats will snuggle up for a cuddle and find contentment curled up in a person’s lap. Although female rats are just as affectionate, they tend to be tremendously energetic and inquisitive. Rats love seeing kind people and will often bounce around waiting to be noticed and picked up. Rats can bond with their human companions to the point that if they are suddenly given away to someone else or forgotten, they can pine to death.
