Pancreatic tissue transplanted from rat embryos develops into an entirely new organ which produces insulin in diabetic rats, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis have found. Within five weeks the transplanted tissue produces enough insulin to maintain normal blood-sugar levels in the rats. ~ Reuters, Sept 8

Wilmington, NC--The Wilmington Sharks used back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly to take a 3-1 lead in the 7th inning Saturday night, on their way to a 4-2 win over the River Rats. New Bern starter John Kalkau allowed just one run over six innings, and Nick Hogan and Brian McBryde each had two hits for the River Rats.
It's always exciting to bring home a couple of new rats, whether it's your first rats or an addition to an already large 'collection'. If you're relatively new to rat-keeping... you might be a little concerned about whether the new rats are settling in all right. One important thing to keep in mind is that rats are very social creatures. They are happier and live longer when they are kept in groups of at least two of the same sex.

This preclinical study evaluated a new anti-inflammatory drug, called MN-001, in rats with irritated bladders. The rats that received the drug had significantly fewer bladder spasms that didn’t have anything to do with urinating and a much longer time between bladder contractions (for urinating or otherwise) than rats that didn’t receive the drug. The investigators said that this drug may have a role in managing mast cell activity and the bladder symptoms that can accompany IC.
