Rats from rescue/rehoming centres are likely to be an unknown quantity. The rescue centre should ask you plenty of questions about your knowledge and cage and will normally ask you to sign a non-breeding declaration. Some rats from rescue centres may well have had a bad start in life, whilst others may have started as a much loved pet and then neglected and often if you are selecting kittens, they will have been born and raised in the rescue centre, but with care and understanding many can still make wonderful pets. The rat rehome website is probably the best place to start if you wanted to rescue a rat.

Most Kangaroo Rats’ hind feet are large with hairy soles that aid in jumping in loose, soft sand. Hind feet are larger than front feet. Some species have 4 toes on hind feet, while others have 5. Short forefeet have strong claws for digging burrows.

Rats eat their way through wood, and even soft metal. They often chew through electrical wiring, creating a fire hazard. They can fit through much smaller gaps than you'd think. They're excellent climbers (other than bandicoots) and good swimmers. A Nordic rat can jump 30 inches straight up (77 cm).

Rats making a mutant protein, copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1), serve as a model of the human disease with many of its features. The motor neurons lived longer in those rats given the human stem cell implants making GDNF, but there was no change in the onset of paralysis or the time of survival. In fact the neurons, despite surviving, were not connecting to muscle.
