Rats: Games

New Bern, NC--Tuesday night's game between the Outer Banks Daredevils and the River Rats was rained out last night, after play was halted in the bottom of the first inning. David Towarnicky had just knocked in the first run of the game to give the River Rats a 1-0 lead when the umpires halted the game for lightning and it was called thirty minutes later when torrential rain rendered the game unplayable.

The Rats would open up the scoring on an Edwin Baron wrap around though from that point on the game would swing in the Chills favor. With them controling the play and scoring four consecutive goals. Stephen Hague would give the Rats hope scoring a snapshot right inside the one minute mark. The Rats knew if they were going to come out on top they would need to change. Playing nearly eight minutes shorthanded and allowing the Chill to fire at will would not lead them to victory. It was time for the rest of the team to back up Jason Winowski who did nearly everything he could to prevent the game from being a blowout.

In its work under the previous NIH contract, the KU team identified a chemical compound they named Gamendazole that caused temporary infertility in male rats by affecting sperm production, Georg said. Gamendazole, on which KU has filed a patent application, emerged from more than 100 compounds tested.

Generally speaking, male rats make better "lap" pets, preferring to sit and have their ears scratched by an attentive human friend. Female rats are very curious, and love to explore and play games. Both genders make great companions.

All the testing of compounds to date has taken place with rats and in test tubes. In the case of Gamendazole, human clinical trials could take place in three to four years with the approval of federal regulators.
