The Rating control provides an intuitive rating experience that allows users to select the number of stars that represents their rating. The page designer can specify the initial rating, the maximum rating to allow, the alignment and direction of the stars, and custom styles for the different states a star can have. Rating ... supports a ClientCallBack event that allows custom code to run after the user has rated something.

In new homes rating often verify energy performance for the ENERGY STAR homes program, energy efficient mortgages, and energy code compliance. Homeowners who want to upgrade the home’s energy efficiency can use the energy rating to evaluate and pinpoint specific, cost-effective improvements. For existing homes, homeowners can receive a report listing cost-effective options for improving the home’s energy rating. An energy rating allows a homebuyer to easily compare the energy performance of the homes being considered.

To get a program's 1-5 star rating, you need to do some simple math; a process that is automated for reviewers using the instrument, but is defined in detail here, for replication purposes. Add up the points in each category (always = 1 point, some extent = .5 points, never = 0 points, and N.A. = Not Averaged) and then divide by the number of items in the category. This number can then be converted to a 0 to 5 point scale. It is important to match the instrument with the type of software. In other words, you can't rate a program low in "Educational Value" if it is designed primarily as a game.

The data gathered by the home energy rater is entered into a RESNET accredited computer program and translated into rating score. The home receives a score between 1 and 100, depending on its relative efficiency. An estimate of the home’s energy costs is ... provided in the report. The home’s energy rating is then equated to a Star rating ranging from one star for a very inefficient home to five stars for a highly efficient home.
