Born Jo Raquel Tejada, Raquel Welch starred in a 1967 remake of One Million Years B.C.; clad in little more than strategically-placed strips of fur, Welch's publicity stills appeared everywhere, and she became a major sex symbol. Although Raquel starred in many films after that, and was certainly a star and a household name, few people ever went to see her movies. Welch instead turned to nightclubs, concert stages and television; she ... continued making films in Europe.

Welch had her first taste of the entertainment world by entering beauty contests as a teenager. After graduating from La Jolla High School in California she worked as a model, waitress, and television weather-girl until making her film debut in 1964 in an uncredited role in the Elvis Presley film, Roustabout. Around this time she divorced from James Welch, her high school sweetheart, whom she married in 1959 and had two children with; Tahnee... an actress, and son Damon, a computer consultant and actor. In 1965 she landed the lead role in Do Not Disturb. Although the film itself was mildly received, what resulted was a contract with Fox which won her a role in another sci-fi flick, Fantastic Voyage. But perhaps her most well-known work was in One Million Years B.C., shot in the same year, a part which launched the five foot six beauty into international sex symbol status.

Raquel Welch, one of the most famous sex symbols of all time, has fueled the sexual fantasies of men for close to four decades. The buxom pin-up's popularity throughout the 1960s and 1970s even eclipses the popularity enjoyed by Pamela Anderson in the 90s. As she approaches 60 years of age the statuesque Raquel Welch is as sexy as ever.

In a very short time span, numerous pictures of Raquel wearing bikinis popped up everywhere. Life Magazine published some, which allowed Raquel to be hired by ABC to be a Billboard Girl for the show Hollywood Palace, and eventually appear in small roles in TVseries like Bewitched. Her first movie role was for Roustabout, rather small but with the opportunity to meet main star Elvis Presley. Raquel would audition for the role of Mary Ann in Gilligan's Island, but enjoyed her first real movie character in 1965 for A Swingin' Summer, playing an intellectual in this rather insipid musical beach comedy typical of these years. As a brainy type, she wore big sunglasses but eventually some fetching bikinis. And she even sang.

On loan out to Hammer Studios in Britain, Welch starred in the remake of One Million Years B.C.. After her appearance as Lust incarnate in the hit Bedazzled, she returned to the United States and appeared in a Western with James Stewart and Dean Martin titled Bandolero!, which was followed by Lady in Cement with Frank Sinatra. Welch's first real starring role was in Myra Breckinridge with Mae West. She took the role as the film's transsexual heroine in an attempt to be taken seriously as an actress, but the movie turned out to be a dismal failure.
