In the late Sixties, nobody personified "sex symbol" more than Raquel Welch. But her film career started rather innocuously with a bit part in Elvis' Roustabout. In the opening scene, Elvis is playing at "Mother's Tea House", and Raquel is one of the college girls, out with their boyfriends. Her first words on-screen: "Uh, how come they call this a tea house, dear?"

Today a movie star is any-one who receives massive personal publicity and has a leading role in a movie, regardless of quality. A movie love goddess is no longer an actress with a highly individual face that excites people's imaginations. Today, a movie pin-up is any young woman who has a tiny waist and large breasts, regardless of credibility.

After Raquel lost steam in Hollywood, she went on to introduce her workout video "Raquel's Total Beauty and Fitness Program" in the 1980s and, more recently, she's released a line of wigs and skin-care products. Raquel broke back into the entertainment business in 2002 with her role in "American Family," the first all-Latino drama series and the first original primetime American episodic drama on PBS in decades.

After an absence of over a decade, in 1994 Welch returned to cinema in the comedy The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult. Throughout the decade, she ... made a number of infomercials and exercise videos, and in 1995 also starred in the short-lived nighttime soap opera CPW. In 1997, she took over for Julie Andrews in the troubled Broadway musical {+Victor/Victoria}, which closed less than a month after Welch's debut performance.
