Rap Artists: Rappers

The new "collaboration" between David Bowie and legendary rap artists like Bun B of UGK and Mos Def isn’t the latest mash-up or genre crossover. In a bout of activism, the rappers forfeited their rapping for a day last Friday to participate in a large-scale protest in Jena, Louisiana in the name of six black teenagers charged with beating a white schoolmate late last year. Out of the six cases, to which Bowie donated $10,000, only one of the defendants has been tried, with his convictions then overturned on the basis that the defendant, Mychal Bell, 16, should not have been tried as an adult. He remains incarcerated.

With advent of female rappers ... came new rap messages which transcended the boasting that was so common with male rappers. For example, Salt ‘N’ Pepper rapped over soul-tinged R&B melodies with teasing, street-savvy raps about maturity, independence from men, and sexual responsibility. Another female rapper, Monie Love, tried not to be too serious with her rap messages. While Queen Latifah raps were about women being optimistic and having pride in themselves and tended to counter male rappers’ lyrics which tended to express a poor opinion of women. However, there are some female rappers like BWP (Bytches with Problems) who voice a vengeful brand of radical black feminism. BWP’s raps dealt with such issues as date rape, male egos, and police brutality.

Atlanta had been firmly established as a hip hop center by artists such as Goodie Mob and OutKast and many other Southern hip hop artists emerged in their wake, whilst gangsta rap artists achieving the most pop-chart success. Jermaine Dupri, an Atlanta-born record producer and talent scout, had great success after discovering youthful pop stars Kris Kross (Totally Krossed Out, 1992) performing at a mall, and later masterminded a large roster of commercially successful acts on his So So Def label which although mostly weighted towards pop-rap & R&B... included rap artists such as Da Brat (Funkdafied, 1994), and himself. Perhaps the most famous gangsta rapper from the South is Scarface.

Rap does not belong in the RRHOF. It is not rock. If you put rappers in put the country artists to. No one would go for that so why put rap in the RRHOF? Do not draw comparisons between the rock and rap lifestyles. Maybe their are some similar things about them.

Pop-inflected gangsta rap continues to be successful into the 21st century, with many artists deftly straddling the divide between their hip hop audience and their pop audience, such as Ja Rule and Jay-Z. The influence of West Coast gangsta rapper Tupac Shakur on the East Coast rap scene has ... become increasingly apparent in the new century.
