Randy Travis: Hand
built 605 days ago
Photo Randy Travis, like the Beatles in rock, defines the coming of a musical era. Listen to any country radio station today, and you'll hear only a handful of acts who recorded before he did, and almost never will you hear a song recorded before Travis came on the scene. In the mid-'80s, as Nashville struggled over the passing of the Urban Cowboy fad and tried harder and harder to cross over into pop, Travis came along with a classic hard-country sound reminiscent of George Jones, Merle Haggard, and Lefty Frizzell and, more than any other performer of his time, brought country back to its roots.

Thanks to Hatcher's persistent efforts and the Randy Ray Live album, Warner Brothers signed Travis in 1985 and suggested that he change his performing name to Randy Travis. "On the Other Hand," his first single for the label, was released in the summer of that year and climbed to number 67. Despite its lackluster performance, radio programmers were enthusiastic for Travis, as evidenced by the number six placing of "1982," which was released late in the year. "1982" was followed by a rerelease of "On the Other Hand" in the spring of 1986. This time, the song hit number one.

In 1982, Travis recorded an independent album Randy Ray Live and Lib Hatcher used it to secure a deal with Warner Bros. Records. However, the label said they had to keep their romnce a secret, so as not to turn away fans, and changed his stage name from Randy Ray to Randy Travis.[4] In 1985, Warner Brothers released Travis' single, "On the Other Hand," which topped out at 67 on the country charts. His next single, "1982", became a Top 10 hit followed by the re-release of "On the Other Hand" in 1986. The re-release became Travis' first number one hit.
