Ramadan: Sunset
built 146 days ago
During Ramadan, the meal called Suhar is recommended to be taken before dawn because it provides nourishment for the rest of the day. After Suhar, everyone prepares again for morning prayer, worshipping either in the mosque or at home. The fast ends at sunset, and the meal which is taken then to break the fast is called Iftar.
Islamic practice, based on sayings of Muhammad, recommends that Muslims have a meal, called sahur, shortly before dawn during Ramadan. After sunset they should hasten the breaking of the fast with another meal, iftar. Iftar should be a light meal, taken before proceeding to sunset prayers. Providing iftar to others, especially to the poor, is considered highly meritorious. Many Muslims have iftar in the neighborhood mosque and invite friends, relatives, and neighbors to join them.

The other celebration occurs after the completion of Ramadan, the Islamic month during which Muslims (believers in Islam) fast daily from dawn to sunset as part of an effort towards self-purification and betterment. This holiday is known as Eid al-Fitr (Festival of Breaking the Fast).
