Ralf Schumacher, last year’s pole-sitter at Suzuka, hopes that a new-spec engine this weekend will propel him onto the podium in Sunday’s race. The younger Schumacher finished second in the Japanese Grand Prix in 2004, and has three other points finishes to his name in the race.
Ralf Schumacher made his Formula One debut in 1997 with the Jordan team and finished on the podium in his third race. However, R. Schumacher retired in more than half his races that season and ended up behind team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella. In 1999 Schumacher transferred to Williams and his performances became solid despite the bad cars he was driving.
In 1997, Ralf joined Jordan, the team where his brother started his career six years before. Ralf's teammate was Giancarlo Fisichella, in his second year in the sport, but ... his first year at Jordan. The two young drivers had a rough beginning, particularly at the third race of the season. It was the 24th lap of the Argentine Grand Prix, and the two drivers were in second and third place, with Fisichella leading. But the Italian was slower than Ralf, and Ralf was impatient to pass. He dived in and knocked Fisichella off the track, and lost some time himself.
After failing to find a Formula One drive, Ralf Schumacher said that he will race a Mercedes in the German Touring Car championship (DTM). His first race will be at Hockenheim on April 13.
