Railroad Tycoon: Railroad Tycoon Ii
built 658 days ago
Railroad Tycoon II is a game about trains for people who love trains. Everything about the game is centered around an authentic look and feeling of the railways. Period video and pictures are interlaced with the game. The design and interface are true to the character of the fabled late 1800's railroads. The original Railroad Tycoon II by PopTop Software for the PC, Mac, and Linux takes you inside the world of a railroad baron of the late 1800s.

What makes Railroad Tycoon II really stand out from other strategy games is the meld between administrative strategy (Sim City) and the practice of making your town (or in this case, railroad) grow (WarCraft). Sure, there have been some other games that have tried to tackle this combination, but few have succeeded in really setting themselves apart. What is the key? The game's premise is unique. It has been all too often that we've seen strategy games built on the notion of combining certain elements of games like Warcraft and Sim City, yet the player is thrown once again into a medieval setting with knights, a blacksmith, and wizards.

Railroad Tycoon II is based upon Pop Top’s proprietary S3D engine, which allows for highly detailed 3D graphics and rendering. The title is the first game developed exclusively for 1024 x 768 resolution in either 16-bit or 8-bit color. The engine, powering 300,000 polygons displayed on the screen at once, generates real-world environments, terrain and a competitive arena. The game will support multiplayer play over LANs, modem, and the Internet.
Railroad Tycoon II comes with a Multi-Player feature as well, supporting play on both local networks (via Appletalk) and the Internet (via TCP/IP). Sadly, there is no option to search for multiplayer games. Gameplay with others is truly an experience, and has been integrated into the game extremely well. Railroads converge, people buy eachother out, and tempers are known to flare.

Railroad Tycoon II is a historically accurate, strategy simulation game. Featuring 30 scenarios, a realistic stock market and economy system, and maps from around the world, the game allows players to build railroad, industry and financial empires.
That emphasis on economics is at the heart of Railroad Tycoon 3. In fact, the economic model is the main gameplay difference between Railroad Tycoon 3 and Railroad Tycoon II. No longer will goods just sit at stations patiently waiting for trains to deliver them. Instead, they’ll make their own way (via carts or cars or boats) to where they’re needed, just more slowly than trains would move them. Also, instead of cities simply having a need for a particular good, cities set a price for each good, and the amount you receive for transporting goods is simply the difference in price between the two cities involved in the delivery. Lastly, cities no longer just produce people willing to go anywhere.
