Replayability is where Railroad Tycoon 3 really shines. With plenty of single player scenarios, multiplayer internet/LAN play and the freehand "sandbox" mode; you won’t lose interest any time soon. Each scenario is more complex then the last, allowing you to learn as you play. There are three difficulty settings, so when you’ve finished a single player scenario, you can play it again on much tougher settings, offering you a whole new challenge.

Railroad Tycoon 3 features a series of single-player campaigns that you must complete in order to win—for example, hauling 30 cars’ worth of coffee from Mexico to Texas. Along the way, you’ll periodically receive a newspaper that can help you get a leg up on new technology or learn about new needs your company can serve. The missions get progressively more difficult as you go. And the challenges take on a wider scope. You’ll move from the United States to Europe, to the rest of the world, and then to a short series of futuristic missions—such as building a rail system for the island of California, after seismic activity has broken it away from the mainland.

Railroad Tycoon 3 features a 3D engine. Mountains rise up and train engines look spectacular. A lot of time was put into making the engines look as close to their real life versions as possible. Since it is possible to rotate to almost any angle the detail put into the train is very important. The environment is ... very well done. When it rains it pours, and sometimes there is even lightning.

The time sequence of Railroad Tycoon is simple. A complete turn is made of: 1)an Auction Phase to determine who gets to play first in the turn, 2)3 rounds of Actions and 3)an Income and Dividend phase to collect revenue.
