True to the spirit of its pioneering predecessors, Railroad Tycoon 3 is a richly textured and hopelessly addictive strategy game that's almost certain to steam straight to the top of the sales charts. [Jan 2004, p.114]

Railroad Tycoon 3 The third game in the Railroad Tycoon series features more locomotives, buildings, and landscapes that you can use to stake your claim in the railroad industry. Railroad Tycoon 3 takes you from overhead views of entire continents down to the detailed close-ups of locomotives. Play 25 challenging scenarios to recreate magnificent feats of railroading history. Build your railroad empire using more than 40 locomotives, 35 different cargoes, and 150 buildings. With an authentic soundtrack, a map editor, and a realistic stock market, Railroad Tycoon 3 immerses you in the Golden Era of Railroading like never before.
On the upside, Railroad Tycoon 3 sports a slick new 3D engine. The game’s world looks pretty good, and it includes some nice panoramic views and cool water effects, and you can zoom way in or way out, or move the camera wherever, all without the game hiccupping or jittering. The interface ... works well. PopTop went to great lengths to make it so you can do everything -- from buying stock to laying track to checking the prices of goods -- without stopping the action, and so the interface includes a lot of panels that can pop up or disappear or be resized, but which are structured in such a way to keep everything intuitive.

The original Railroad Tycoon was created by world-renowned developer, Sid Meier. It was the first Tycoon game ever made, and successfully merged a well-crafted business model with a player friendly graphical presentation. Railroad Tycoon was a critical success, winning 'Game of the Year' from the major magazines of the day, and became a worldwide bestseller.
A game session in Railroad Tycoon is won by accumulating Victory Points. One of the six Actions proposed by the system brings most of the victory points: the delivery of Goods Cubes from one city to another. The further away a Goods Cube travels from its city of origin, the better the scoring is for a given delivery. Of course, scoring is primordial but is a short term accomplishment. Investing in the railroad empire (building links, improving locomotives), on the other hand, is more of a long term discipline but it helps grabbing more Victory Points in one delivery. This whole balance gives almost equal importance between each of the 6 possible Actions proposed by the system.
