Rage Against the Machine was formed in Los Angeles in 1991. Vocalist Zack De La Rocha was previously in a band called Inside Out and took the name "Rage Against the Machine" from Inside Out's second unreleased album. Their first public performance was in a living room in Orange County. Shortly after this the band recorded a 12-song demo tape which included "Bullet in the Head" later released on RATM's self titled debut album. They managed to sell 5,000 copies of the demo tape through their fan club and at various live performances around L.A. Rage then supported Porno For Pyros on their debut performance.

Rage Against the Machine released their debut album Rage Against the Machine in 1992, which became a commercial success. Following a slot on the 1993 Lollapalooza, the band did not release a follow-up record until Evil Empire in 1996. The band's third album The Battle of Los Angeles was released in 1999. During their initial nine year run, they became one of the most popular and influential political bands in contemporary music.[4]

Rage Against The Machine is no stranger to controversy. The band's had a go at retailers Gap, campaigning for garment worker's rights in the video for new single 'Guerilla Radio', the guitar-frenzied second song on the album. Now they're in deep water with anti-abortion campaigning group Rock For Life which says the new album supports their view that Rage spreads ''hateful propaganda.''

Rage Against the Machine performed at California's Coachella Music Festival in April, its first gig since frontman Zack de la Rocha left the band in 2000. The group ... signed up to play three dates on the Rock The Bells hip-hop festival in July and August. Originally, those were said to be the only dates that RATM would play this year.

At the point of their break-up in 2000, Rage Against the Machine had become one of the most popular political hard rock bands of all time, and certainly of the 1990s. They released four albums throughout the 90s. Their four albums (Rage Against the Machine 1992, Evil Empire 1996, The Battle of Los Angeles 1999 and Renegades 2000) gave them major success throughout the world with their political outtake. They have numerous references from other musicians to movies and even games and ... have done numerous protests for social activism, native American rights and against capitalism. Rage Against The Machine and Metallica are the first Acts confirmed for Electric Weekend, which is set to happen on May Friday 30 and Saturday 31 at John Lennon Auditorium in Getafe. Both bands will perform exclusive shows in Spain at the event.
