Radium is a decay product of uranium and is therefore found in all uranium-bearing ores. Radium was originally acquired from pitchblende ore from Joachimsthal, Bohemia (One metric ton of pitchblende yields 0.0001 grams of radium). Carnotite sands in Colorado provide some of the element, but richer ores are found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Great Lakes area of Canada, and can ... be extracted from uranium processing waste. Large uranium deposits are located in Ontario, New Mexico, Utah, Virginia, Australia, and in other places.

As a broodmare sire, Radium had daughters who were successful not only in Britain, but in Australia and particularly, the United States. Daughter ECURIE, who was a winner, was the dam of Diligence, a Hurry On colt which captured the Newmarket St. Leger and the Sussex Stakes and later became the broodmare sire of classic filly Sun Chariot. MAGICAL MUSIC produced Knight of the Grail, a winner of the Irish Derby.

Radium has 25 different known isotopes, four of which are found in nature, with 226Ra being the most common. 223Ra, 224Ra, 226Ra and 228Ra are all generated in the decay of either U or Th. 226Ra is a product of 238U decay, and is the longest-lived isotope of radium with a half-life of 1602 years; next longest is 228Ra, a product of 232Th breakdown, with a half-life of 6.7 years.

In spite of the general disdain for the press on the part of the plaintiffs, a moment arrived in the case when the "Radium Girls" needed a champion. Their physical condition was deteriorating and their financial situation was pitiful. Time was running out. Alice Hamilton had carefully laid out a strategy in the previous months with the editor of one of the nation's most powerful newspapers of the time, the New York World. An avowedly liberal newspaper founded by Joseph Pulitzer, the World championed public health causes as part of its mission to "never lack sympathy with the poor [and] always remain devoted to the public welfare."30 Hamilton's long-time friend was World editor Walter Lippmann; he had already worked with Hamilton, ensuring that coverage of the Ethyl leaded gasoline controversy in 1925 included both sides of the story, including large amounts of copy from university scientists critical of Standard Oil.31

At five, Radium attained his finest form and proved himself a stayer of exceptional quality. During the season he accounted for the 1-1/2 mile Dullingham Stakes, the 2-1/2 mile Goodwood Cup, the 2-1/2 mile Doncaster Cup, and a second running of the Jockey Club Cup. He ... walked over for the Beaufort Stakes. He finished second to The White Knight in the Ascot Gold Cup over 2-1/2 miles at Ascot, second to Torpoint in the 2-3/4 mile Alexandra Plate, and second to Biniou in the Prix du Conseil Municipal. In the Coronation Cup at Epsom, Radium was third to The White Knight and Dean Swift.
