Cobra FRS radios [A]ny 10-meter amateur radio can be easily modified to work on the CB channels and the majority of professional truck drivers are using these higher power radios when they are on the road. Initially these radios were used to just reach the 40 channels below and the 40 channels above the common 40 CB channels. This is what is referred to Single Side Band (SSB). These radios have switches for Lower Side Band (LSB) and Upper Side Band (USB). But most of these radios can be fine-tuned to find little-used frequencies between these larger channels. Many of these radios can be used to access nearly 300 AM frequencies.
The new radios have passed a battery of tests at the Fire Academy, Mr. Scoppetta said, and are being evaluated. Although they were supposed to operate using more advanced digital technology, the radios have been reprogrammed to operate in so-called analog mode, the same technology as the existing models. The new radios... operate on UHF frequencies, not VHF frequencies like the old models. They are believed to be better at penetrating buildings, and the new radios are compatible with police radios.

"Point to point microwave radios were well suited for solving the delay problems associated with leased lines," according to Chris Bertolini, President of High Country Communications. "Installation costs were low because the radios were essentially plug and play," Bertolini said. The integrated spectrum analyzer of the Stratex Velox radio aided channel selection and allowed HCC to check the communication path for possible interference prior to final installation.
The radios are available in a value pack configuration which includes two radios, a desktop charger and rechargeable batteries. The new radios will be sold at major retailers in January 2008.
