Radiohead: Songs
built 302 days ago
Radiohead remain a magnet for misfits everywhere, but their outsider status is only a part of their appeal. What fans seem to like, even more than the content of the songs, is the sense that the band members have labored over every aspect of the product. They are skilled, first of all, at inventing the kinds of riddles that teen-agers enjoy unravelling. The records, the videos, the official Web site, even the T-shirts all cry out for interpretation. Why are words spelled funny? What are all these charts and diagrams?

Nonetheless, Hail to the Thief was Radiohead's fourth consecutive UK #1 album. It had more moderate commercial success in the US, debuting at #3 on the Billboard chart with the band's highest first week sales to date, but falling off soon after. The album's lead single, "There There", peaked at #4 in the British charts, while subsequent singles "Go to Sleep" and "2+2=5" charted at #12 and #15 respectively. "There There"... was a #1 hit in Canada, and returned the band to U.S. modern rock radio favour, after several years without a song on playlists. At the Grammy Awards, the album was nominated for Best Alternative Album, Radiohead's fifth straight nomination in that category. Producer Godrich received the Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album.

Some people do not like Radiohead and it is completely understandable because it is not easy listening music. It isn't some pop song that everybody loves within the first 30 seconds of the song and then gets bored with it in a month. It's music that grows on you over time and eventually hits you with a permanent mark that leaves you in amazement.

A great sense of humour is not something people tend to associate with Radiohead. For no good reason, they’re considered a rather grumpy bunch of people: pretentious public school political activists with a penchant for the type of songs commonly used as background music for documentaries about war or suicide. Radiohead – good humoured? You’re having a laugh.
