Hellenic Society of Archaeometry A new facility for accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating and for ion beam analysis has been put in operation at the University of Lecce in Lecce, Italy. The facility has been founded in order to be a national centre for the development and the application of nuclear spectroscopy techniques in the studies on cultural heritage.

The technique of radiocarbon dating was discovered by Willard Libby and his colleagues in 1949[2] during his tenure as a professor at the University of Chicago. Libby estimated that the steady state radioactivity concentration of exchangeable carbon-14 would be about 14 disintegrations per minute (dpm) per gram. In 1960, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry for this work.
CEDAD is the first Italian Center for radiocarbon dating by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry. It was established in 2000 by the Applied Physics Group of the Department of Engineering of Innovation of the University of Salento.

Whatever its source, a statistical analysis of the radiocarbon dates reported in 1988 shows significant statistical differences between the Oxford observations and the Arizona observations. It should be noted that the head of one of the labs that originally conducted the radiocarbon tests on the Shroud subsamples agrees with the determination that the Oxford lab results were statistically significantly different from the others. Robert E.M. Hedges of Oxford University’s Laboratory for Archaeology, who was a participant in the original radiocarbon dating of the Shroud, noted in 1997(6) that,
