The Scoop: Once upon a time, Radio Shack was home to all the basic electronic stuff you really needed. But over the years the chain has evolved, carving a more limited, yet specific, niche for itself. Step inside today and you'll find a wide range of Radio Shack-brand items such as phones, speakers and antennas, along with a hefty number of RCA products along the lines of televisions and receivers. But the real draw that helps this shop compete against the big guys is the immense selection of cables, wires and other behind-the-scenes electronic tools and hardware. To lure in the younger customers, there's always a good selection of radio-controlled cars, games and battery-operated paraphernalia.

Each of these cute vintage hi-fi units is approximately 10" x 4" x 7". The amp, a "Little Jewel" LJ-2, was made by Grommes. Grommes was founded in 1946 and made some very nice amplifiers. Still in business today, the company is called Grommes-Precision, and it is one of the last American manufacturers of custom and consumer audio equipment.

RadioShack tape recorder In 1978, three years after the famous MITS Altair, Radio Shack introduced the TRS-80, one of the first mass-produced personal computers that became a big hit. This was followed by the TRS-80 Color Computer designed to attach to a television for use as a monitor. In the late 1980s, Radio Shack made the transition from its proprietary 8-bit computers to its proprietary IBM-PC-compatible Tandy computers; ... shrinking margins and a lack of economies of scale led Radio Shack to exit the computer-manufacturing market by the mid-1990s.
The DX-375 and DX-396 were similar solid entry level digital AM/FM Stereo/Shortwave PLL portables offered by Radio Shack in the 1990's. The 396 replaced the 375, when it was phased out. Unlike most shortwave radios of the era sold by Radio Shack, these were not manufactured by Sangean. It was rumored that they were built by Tecsun. Supporting this rumor is the similarity of the 375 to the Grundig YB-305 which was made for Lextronics by Tecsun.
