Radiant Silvergun: Games
built 272 days ago
banner Radiant Silvergun seemed simple enough. It was a vertical styled shooter with intense 2D graphics mixed with a healthy dose of 3D polygons for good measure. Treasure, continuing with their tradition of making hardware do what it isn't supposed to do, pushed the Saturn to unseen limits with this unique blast-a-thon which even turned non shooter fans onto the genre. The game more often then not goes for well over $100 on eBay on any given day.
Instead of advancing the game in a different direction as was the case in Einhander, Radiant Silvergun appeals in the way it takes a classic top-down formula and does it flawlessly. The graphics and gameplay blend together perfectly, creating an intense experience that is unequaled by any other next-gen shooter. The control is good as well, making all the methods of destruction easy to execute and making it possible to avoid thousands upon thousands of shots directed at your craft. After all, there is no better feeling than avoiding everything that is thrown at you and overcoming seemingly impossible levels.

Nanostray is a bit like Silpheed meets Radiant Silvergun, but don't get all excited just yet; it's a lot more of the former than the latter. 2D gameplay is definitely the bread and butter of Nanostray, but the 3D graphics engine and Silpheed-like camera angle keep the game from touching the same level of quality as your regular Metal Black or Rayforce. Instantly accessible weapons systems are what recall the violent glee of Radiant Silvergun, yet collision issues keep Nanostray from achieving the same classic status as that game – though a cult reputation is still in the cards for the game. This is the first, and hopefully not last shmup for the DS, and while it may be a high quality product worthy of approval from the biggest shmup fan, there's still a lot of improvements left to be made on Shin'en's part.
Known as one of the Holy Grails of console game collecting and one of the greatest 2D shooters of all time, Radiant Silvergun does not need an introduction for those schooled in old-school cult-classic gaming. But for those that have begun to search for the greatest games that never made it to the United States store shelves, this classic shmup from Treasure is an excellent place to begin.

True to Treasure form, Radiant Silvergun defies gaming convention by incorporating unique gameplay elements to make it stand apart from the rest of its genre. The weapon system consists of three base weapons (a forward shot, a spread shot, and a homing shot) that can be combined for a total of 7 unique weapons. Weapons level-up in RPG fashion as you use them, increasing their strength as the stages progress.
With a name like Radiant Silvergun, Treasure's famed shooter will probably get strange, puzzled looks from the average gamer. With the types of screenshots you'll see -- that of a 2D, vertically scrolling shmup -- you'll probably get the, "who cares?" reaction. Is there no more room in today's world for an arcade shmup?
