The brute-force Radeon 9700 Pro has eight pixel pipelines, each equipped with a single texturing unit. With a core clock speed of 325 MHz, it cranks out a pixel fill rate of 2.6 gigapixels per second—that's roughly 2.6 billion pixels per second. All of that horsepower would be useless without the Radeon 9700 Pro's 256-bit-wide memory data path and four-way interleaved memory controller. With a memory clock speed of 620 MHz, the graphics card has a peak memory bandwidth of 19.8 GBps, roughly twice that of the Leadtek WinFast A250 Ultra TD MyVIVO.

The Radeon Xpress 200 north bridge has a hefty 22 lanes of PCI Express connectivity. (Lanes are the bidirectional pairs of point-to-point communication links that make PCI Express work; each lane offers 250MB/s of bandwidth in each direction.) 16 of those lanes will be dedicated to a PCI-E X16 graphics slot in a typical configuration, while two of them on the Radeon Xpress 200 are dedicated to act as links to the south bridge. That leaves four lanes free to service on-board peripherals or PCI-E X1 slots.

The Radeon 9800 SE actually comes in two varieties. One model has a 256-bits memory architecture with a ‘L’-shaped memory chip layout, while the other model has a 128-bits memory architecture. Both models are moddable but the performance of the model with the 256-bits memory architecture will be far superior to the 128-bits memory model.

Many of you don't have an AGP port so you'll need a PCI version of the Radeon if you want more 2D or 3D speed. You ask me, "How much speed do I give up using the PCI version? Is AGP really that much faster?" The answer is, "It depends." It depends on what application you run. It can vary from "NO DIFFERENCE" to as much as "33% DIFFERENCE."

The Radeon 9800 SE is basically a cut-down version of the Radeon 9800. While the Radeon 9800 and 9800 Pro have 8 pixel pipelines, the SE only has 4 active pipelines. Actually, it has 8 physical pipelines but only four are active. The remaining pipelines have been disabled. That's what so "special" about the SE version.
