Wawrinka took a 3-0 lead in the third set, but Stepanek broke back for 3-2 and evened the score with a love game. Serving at deuce with Wawrinka leading 4-3, Stepanek took a medical time-out and then served with tape above his knee to even the score at 4-4.

The form of Stepanek looks like propelling the 26-year-old well past his year-end finish of 33 in 2004. Standing 28th, the quiet man has already redeemed himself here after last year's loss in the second round to Rainer Schuettler.

Stepanek, 24, playing only his third Grand Slam, was chiefly known as a doubles player and a mimic. He won the chance to make his maiden appearance on centre court by beating Gustavo Kuerten. On last night's display, you had to think that he did not beat Kuerten as Radek Stepanek, but by impersonating a good player. Or that he took his doubles partner on court with him.

Stepanek’s ATP ranking has plummeted to 101st following his nightmare finish to the 2006 season. He suffered a neck injury while practising in Toronto in August. For a while, he feared his professional career might be over.

The win was especially emotional for Stepanek after an injury-plagued year in 2006. He reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and broke into the top-10 in the ATP rankings for the first time in his career before suffering a neck injury that kept him out for the rest of the season. The injury has continued to plague him since.
