On game point at 4-4, the righthanded Stepanek ran down a lob by hitting over his left shoulder with his back to the net. When Djokovic returned it with a drop volley on the opposite end of the court, Stepanek ran it down and then attempted a crazy between-the-legs lob attempt that flew out. While Djokovic held for a 5-4 lead, Stepanek earned a raucous ovation. The crowd showered both men with cheers between changeovers.

Flushing Meadows was buzzing yesterday over the new sensation on the men's tour - third-seeded Novak Djokovic - and his epic battle against Radek Stepanek. In a match that may go down as the best of the tournament - with apologies to James Blake's five-setter over Fabrice Santoro the night before - Djokovic outlasted Stepanek, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (2), in a second-round thriller that was every bit as good as the score indicates.
