Radar detectors should filter out noise and trigger signals only from actual radar guns. Look for models with city/highway mode, which varies sensitivity to limit urban false alarms. Many radar detectors now allow you to disable X-band alerts. X-band radar guns are now nearly obsolete in most areas, yet conflicts on the X-band frequency often trigger false alarms.

A few other premium radar detectors get some consideration from critics. Radar Roy Reyer at RadarBusters.com gushes over the Beltronics Pro RX65 (*est. $330) , calling it his number one pick. He notes that it is very similar in performance to the Escort 8500 X50 (*est. $300) , but with a few extra features (Escort owns Beltronics). Those features include voice alerts and Ku band capabilities for European use (Ku band radar is not used in the U.S.).
