R Kelly: Public Announcement
built 140 days ago
Urban R&B musician R Kelly and his supporting band Public Announcement began recording in 1992 at the tail end of the new jack swing era, yet he was able to keep much of its sound alive while remaining commercially successful. While he created a smooth, professional mixture of hip-hop beats, soul-man crooning, and funk, the most distinctive element of Kelly's music is its explicit carnality.

When the videotape that shows a man resembling R. Kelly appearing to have sex with a young girl and urinating on her surfaced in 2002, the scandal rocked the music world and briefly cast Kelly as the villain. His former protégée Stephanie “Sparkle” Edwards publicly identified the girl in the tape as her 14-year-old niece. (The girl... continues to deny she was in the tape.) It became a gritty bootleg video watched and downloaded in homes across the country. The gossip was viral. In June of that year, Kelly was arrested and indicted on multiple counts of child pornography in connection with the tape. Kelly, who maintains it’s someone else in the video, has pleaded not guilty to all the charges and is awaiting a trial, which has been postponed several times.

In November 2007, Kelly's longtime publicist, Regina Daniels, issued a statement announcing she had resigned her position. "I have always prided myself on professionalism, respect and loyalty," Daniels said. "I ended my relationship with Kelly because there are some lines you just don't cross." Daniels' husband, music retailer George Daniels, said in a statement, "I have ... disassociated myself from Kelly."[12]

NEW YORK - A member of rapper Jay Z's entourage released pepper spray at R. Kelly during a joint concert at Madison Square Garden, Kelly's publicist said. The spraying happened about an hour into Friday night's show, when Kelly walked onstage and said he saw two people in the audience waving guns, publicist Allan Mayer said.
