built 140 days ago
After R Kelly recovered from the McDonalds scandal, he released his new album Born in the 14th Century. After the release party Kelly lied down in his diamond encrusted platinum tempurpedic and listened to a book on tape of Pauly Shore's hey Buuuudddddyyy as read by Wilford Brimley, and was inspired to become a firefighter.

In 1989, Kelly formed the group MGM with friend Marc McWilliams and released his first single "Why You Wanna Play Me" on Tavdash Records. The following year, the group appeared on the TV talent show Big Break (hosted by Natalie Cole) and won. Kelly was discovered by Wayne Williams (current senior vice-president of A&R at Jive/BMG), and Kelly's manager Eric Payton agreed to let Kelly sign with Jive. In late 1991, the 24-year-old songwriter and his group Public Announcement recorded much of what would become their first release Born Into the '90s. Released January 14, 1992, the album had two Billboard Top 40 hits including "Honey Love", and "Slow Dance (Hey Mr. DJ)." "Dedicated" was the groups biggest pop hit, spending two weeks at number one on the Billboard R&B Singles chart.

By 1988, Kelly had started to develop his unique sounds playing his keyboards and becoming a street performer. A young musical executive by the name of Wayne Williams sought Kelly and helped get him sign to his first and only record label, Jive Records, in the end of 1989. After forming the group Public Announcement, he and the group went into the recording studio in the end of 1990 and recorded much of what would be Born Into the '90s at a recording studio Kelly leased. Within a few months, songs like "She's Got that Vibe", "Slow Dance", "Dedicated", "Definition of a Hottie" and "Honey Love" would be the featured songs in Born Into the '90s, which was released several days after Kelly's 25th birthday in 1992. A huge R&B success, the album would yield the featured songs as the hits and would eventually go Platinum selling over a million copies.

Not long after making his religious announcement, Kelly fulfilled another one of his dreams: playing professional basketball. Though it was not with the world-renowned NBA, he played a full eight-week season in the summer of 1997 for the Atlantic City Seagulls of the United States Basketball League. Soon Kelly returned to his musical career, releasing his fourth album titled R. in 1998. The album featured several spiritual songs, including a duet with Canadian singer Celine Dion. Kelly blended his former song styles with his religious leanings in his next album TP-2.com, released in 2000, which featured both spiritual and more explicitly sexual songs.

Subsequent years have brought more great music and more scandal from the larger-than-life R Kelly. The double concept album R in 1998 was a high point, while an infamous sex scandal was a definite low.
