Quinine: Trees
built 383 days ago
Quinine tablets are a common treatment. Quinine often reduces the number and severity of leg cramps, but may not stop them altogether. One tablet at bedtime is the normal dose. A four week course is commonly tried at first and can be continued if the number of leg cramps is reduced. It may be worth stopping the quinine tablets every three months or so to see if they are still needed.

Quinine should not be used for treating muscle cramp. The efficacy of quinine in preventing cramp is marginal at best, and is outweighed by the risk of severe thrombocytopenia. For more information about quinine-induced thrombocytopenia, see Safety issues.

Quinine is indicated for the treatment of chloroquine resistant falciparum malaria, either alone, with pyrimethamine and a sulfonamide, or with a tetracycline. It is ... considered alternative therapy for chloroquine sensitive strains of P. falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale and P. vivax.
