Quests are a big part of every RPG, and they'll matter in Hellgate: London as well, of course. That being said, Hellgate:London is an action RPG, and isn't totally quest-dominated. You can just go out and kill monsters if you want to, and thanks to the random level layouts, you'll have fun doing so in different ways. Lots of RPGs are fun when you first start, but boring to replay since everything unfolds exactly as it did the first time. That shouldn't be a problem with Hellgate: London, since as was true with Diablo and Diablo II, replayability is one of the major priorities of the design team. They want you to play through their game over and over again, and while you may enjoy doing the quests, you may not want to bother.

Quests are tasks that players may perform for NPCs for rewards and experience. An abundance of quests are available, each with varying level requirements and some having additional requirements such as job, fame or the completion of another quest. For example the quest "Building Blackbull's New House" requires 10 fame, a level requirement of 30, and the completion of "Fixing Blackbull's House". Some quests have quite a low level requirement for their difficulty and are literally impossible to complete straight away. Different rewards such as experience can be received by the player after completing certain quests, and some have substantial rewards. Some quests can be redone after completing it for the first time, though the reward(s) and given EXP may not be the same (all jump quests are repeatable with random rewards). Unlike most MMORPGs, it's not possible to escape the grind by completing quests.

The Quests category has articles on many specific quests. While not as comprehensive as database sites like Allakhazam, Thottbot or Wowhead, these articles have the advantage of a central place for updated information on a quest as opposed to a long list of sometimes conflicting or old comments tacked on to the end of quest data. New quests can be added to WoWWiki by reading Creating a quest article, following the Quest Boilerplate and categorize by main zone.

Quests are plentiful in Lusternia, and as a new adventurer you'll find that they can be as easy as giving hay to a cow and leading her to a dairy, or leading a pixie to the Mother Moonhart Tree. However, many of even these simple quests have underlying effects which effect the economy and world around you. For example, leading cows to a dairy will cause the milk production in that village to increase, a commodity useful to those who take the cooking skill. Or leading the pixie to the Mother Moonhart Tree, will increase the power reserves which benefit Serenwilde. As you become more experienced, you'll find how quests layer upon each other to intertwine within the complex realm of Lusternia.

Quests that are labelled as 'Master' difficulty are particularly difficult. They require an extra amount of teamwork or understanding of builds. The monsters in them are ... usually more powerful than the standard monsters of the region. In Eye of the North the first Elite quest is available during the elite dungeon Slavers' Exile.

Quests will be organized into chapters, much like chapters in a book or acts in a play. Some quests are self-contained in a single chapter, but others branch out across multiple chapters which must be completed in seperate stages as you work your way through the game. The scope of a quest is indicated by it's radius. It's fair to say that the bigger quests will have more relevance to the story of the Age of Reckoning than others.
