The English Language Institute (ELI) of Queens College (QC) is a full-time, intensive academic program for learning English as a second language. Established in 1945, the ELI at QC is the oldest English language school in the City University of New York (CUNY) and one of the oldest in the entire United States.

Last fall, Queens College, a commuter campus, began incorporating "Reacting to the Past" into courses. "Our issue was how to create a sense of belonging outside a residential setting," said Fred Purnell, a philosophy professor. "Teaching here can feel like teaching on a subway train. You have no idea what's happening one car up."

In addition to all general Queens College requirements, students must complete all requirements for the appropriate major. Students must have a grade point average of at least B– (=GPA of 2.7) in courses taken for the major at Queens College in order to be certified for graduation with a BBA degree. All courses required for the major must be completed with a grade of C– or better. All courses in business fundamentals, society and ethics, and concentration courses taken for the BBA must be completed with a letter grade to be counted for the major. P/NC grades will not be accepted.

In June 1964, Queens College student Andrew Goodman, along with fellow civil rights activists James Chaney and Michael Schwerner were kidnapped and murdered in Mississippi while trying to register African Americans to vote. Last month, a former Ku Klux Klan member was arrested and charged with their murder. Michael Schwerner’s brother, Steven... attended Queens College around the same time.

Queens College seeks to admit freshmen who have completed a strong academic program in high school with a high B average. Admission is based on a variety of factors, including high school grades, the academic program, and available test scores. Successful candidates will have chosen a well-rounded program of study that includes academic coursework in math (3 years) and a foreign language (3 years). Although not required for admission, the SAT is strongly recommended, and a minimum score of 1050 will be an important factor for those who do not meet the above profile.
