Queen Elizabeth II visited Historic Jamestowne on May 4, 2007, in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown in 1607. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh accompanied her on her trip. During this visit, the Queen saw the 1607 James Fort site discovered in 1996 and thousands of artifacts on display in the Archaearium at Historic Jamestowne. She was the first child of The Duke and Duchess of York, who later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The Princess Elizabeth, along with her sister the Princess Margaret (born four years later), had her early education at home and, after her father succeeded to the Throne in 1936, became heiress presumptive.
