Queen Elizabeth Ii: Edinburgh Castle
built 291 days ago
Considered one of the world's most powerful and respected heads of state, though in practice Queen Elizabeth II exercises very little executive power. Over her long reign, (55 years, the third longest in British and commonwealth history) the Queen has seen her country through numerous crises. She has done so with a sense of quiet fortitude and discipline, having dispensed her time-honored wisdom in regular meetings over several decades with 12 British prime ministers, from Winston Churchill, Harold Macmillan, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair to today's Gordon Brown, who have all taken her counsel seriously. The Queen is ... among other things, Supreme governor of the Church of England and commander in Chief of the British armed forces. Despite her 81 years, the Queen maintains a vigorous schedule of public travel and official duties. In May the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh made their fourth state visit to the U.S. to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement.

On 6 June, at Windsor Castle, the Queen lit the first bonfire in a chain of beacons which linked around the country. The following day many streets were closed to traffic to allow residents, who had decorated their homes in Union Jack bunting, to throw street parties in honour of their beloved monarch. It was the largest public display of affection for the Royal Family since the Coronation.

The Queen takes a keen personal interest in the Church of England, but, in practice, delegates authority in the Church of England to the Archbishop of Canterbury.
