Quebec is Canada's only majority French speaking province, with a population descended from colonists of New France who arrived before 1763. Originally known as Lower Canada, the province's boundaries have been extended from a strip along the Saint Lawrence River to the far north. The vast majority of the population remains in original territory. The largest city is Montreal, where the remnants of Quebec's formerly powerful English minority remain. The provincial capital is Quebec City, which retains its ancient walls.

Quebec City's cultural scene is diverse, from the high aspects of opera and symphony to intimate boites à chansons, with their Celtic-tinged Québécois folk music. While there is some experimental theatre, much of the theatre tends towards the mainstream, with larger performances often consisting of light-hearted musicals. The best way for new immigrants in Quebec City to appreciate the culture... is during one of the large festivals, in which almost the whole city seems to become involved. The name "Quebec", which comes from an Algonkin word meaning "Where the river narrows", originally referred to the area around Quebec City where the Saint Lawrence River narrows to a cliff-lined gap. Early variations in the spelling of the name included Québecq (Levasseur, 1601) and Kébec (Lescarbot 1609).[7]. French explorer Samuel de Champlain chose the name Québec in 1608 for the colonial outpost he would use as the administrative seat for the French colony of New France.[8].

Quebec City is located at the heart of a very attractive economic region. This is in part due to its geographic location and access to a market representing over 360 million consumers, 80 million of which are in a 1,000 km radius. The region itself offers a diversified economic base and the population's strong entrepreneurial culture consistently leads to the creation of new businesses.
