Quebec (spelled Québec in French) is a province in Eastern Canada. It is the biggest of Canada's ten provinces. It is the province with the second-highest number of people. Most of Quebec's inhabitants live along or close to the banks of the Saint Lawrence River. Not many people live in the north part of the province. Unlike the other provinces, most people in Quebec speak French.

Quebec is the sole Canadian province whose population is mainly French-speaking and where French is the only official language on the provincial level. However, there is a significant English-speaking minority and English is widely spoken, especially in Montreal. Other elements of French tradition, such as the system of civil law... remain strong in Quebec. Quebec has a strong and active nationalist movement that advocates for greater autonomy and considers Quebec to be a nation within Canada.[6] There have been (unsuccessful) referendums on independence in 1980 and 1995.

Home to a large portion of Canada's francophones (French-speakers), many of whom regard Quebec's language and culture as so different from those of the rest of Canada that Quebec should be a separate country. The rest of Canada keeps agonizing about whether to change the Canadian constitution to deal with this. The Quebec debate has a passionate and even bloody history. The Front de Libération du Québec (FLQ) bombed Montreal in 1963, kidnapped the British trade commissioner in 1970, and kidnapped and murdered the Québec labour and immigration minister Pierre Laporte in October, 1970. This last incident led to the October Crisis, when then-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau invoked the War Measures Act, under which 465 people were arrested.

A county in the Wild Wild West of Quebec named after the very first broken down car to be left on a front lawn in Amerique du Nord. The Quebec language police are hunted indiscriminately here for their pelts and thick skulls (secret ingredients to poutine). Brian Murray is the mayor of Shawlbyville, Pontiac County (right next to Springfield), he's ... a Senator who is famous for using a Maple Leaf for protection.

Quebec is blessed with some of the finest beers on the North American continent. As in the rest of Canada, they are higher-proof than in the US; alcohol content starts around 5-6% but 8-12% is not unusual. Americans should check labels and drink cautiously to gauge their own tolerance.

If you want to come to Canada as a Quebec-selected skilled worker, you must first apply to the Quebec government for a Certificat de sélection du Québec, the official immigration document issued by the Government of Quebec. Visit the website of the Quebec ministry that handles immigration for more information on how to obtain a certificate. You will find a link in the Related Links section at the bottom of this page.
