Abstract : The report gives a survey of the research work in the quantum theory of matter carried out by the Uppsala Quantum Chemistry Group during the period 1 September 1967 - 31 August 1968. The contents of 21 Preliminary Research Reports and 18 published papers is briefly reviewed.

Since the time of its inception, quantum theory has achieved astounding success. Till date there is no experiment which contradicts quantum theory. Its stands as a strong contender for the most successful theory. Despite this success, there is a deep dissatisfaction on the issue of interpretation. The unitary evolution of the state in quantum mechanics leads to fantastic consequences, like the many worlds picture. There have been radical attempts to modify quantum mechanics, but none so far seems satisfactory.

Quantum information processing rules are somewhat different from those of classical information theory. For instance (Ekert, Nature 367 (10 Feb 94) 513-514) Benjamin Schumacher has shown that for quantum 2-state systems there is a lower bound on the number of quantum bits per symbol and that the lower bound is LESS than the classical entropy of the Shannon noiseless coding theorem. The relevant difference is that two distinguishable symbol-state preparations can produce two different symbol-states that CANNOT be reliably distinguished.

Bohr's move allows for the introduction of a new quantum notion of property involving relationality to interpret quantum theory. But Bohr himself did not go that route. He instead treated his insight epistemologically, by arguing that the 'inseparability hypothesis' which leads to the relational mode of description, is a result of the limitations of ordinary language we have run into, in the context of quantum theory (Bohr, 1957, p. 25).

This advanced undergraduate-level text provides a formulation of the quantum theory in terms of qualitative and imaginative concepts outside classical theory. A broad range of specific applications follows, worked out in considerable mathematical detail. Also included: an examination of the relationship between quantum and classical concepts. Preface. Index.

By following the historical development of 20th century quantum science, the student should gain an appreciation of how a scientific theory grows and develops, and the strong interplay between a scientific observation and its philosophical meaning. While the presentation of the scientific material will be essentially nonmathematical, the student should ... come to understand what quantum mechanics is about and how it relates to current technology.
