Quakers today who have followed the same process of living and working with other mammal species can now say from their own experience that these are peaceful, loving, trusting souls. A pig has higher intelligence than many humans who are cared for throughout their lives in institutions. A cow is more distressed when its calf is taken away than many human parents who abandon their children. Sheep are more community-minded than a lot of today’s young people.

While tolerance for the Quakers, came slowly and painfully over time, the precipitating cause for some abatement in their dire punishements came under orders from King Charles in November 1661. " . . .that if there be any of those people called Quakers amongst you, now already condemmed to suffer Death, or other Corporal Punishment, or that are imprisoned or obnoxious to the the like Condemnation, you are to forbear to proceed any farther . . ." One can imagine Endicott's indignation--all the more so that it was delivered by a Quaker whom he had formerly sentenced to stripes and banishment.

It should not be imagined... that Quakers are impossibly 'good' people. Like others they have their faults and fall short of their own aims. Nor do they claim that their path is the only true one; they have simply found it right for them.
