Quake Iii Arena: Team Deathmatch
built 291 days ago
PC gamers everywhere know the goodness of Quake III, but this is relatively new territory for console gamers. Up until now, a pure deathmatch game has not appeared on a console system, although that feature has been among the most popular in games like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. So will non-PC gaming people care? They should if the game is this good. Almost everything that was in the PC version of Quake III is in the DC version although there are a few stages missing, made up by a good number of new features that are exclusive to the Sega console.
Quake III Arena, although scaled down from its PC counterpart, is still certainly a worthy addition to your library if the deathmatch experience is something you enjoy. Just make sure that you have the ability to log on to the net, as this was the essential reason behind the game's development. Although there are arguably better FPS multiplayer options available across all systems, this title represents the Dreamcast's best option for the time being. ~ Jon Thompson, All Game Guide

While Quake III Arena's focus may be its multiplayer deathmatch component, it does have a single-player mode. When playing alone, you can go up against artificial intelligence-controlled bots. The bots do their best to act like human players, and on the higher difficulty settings, they put up an excellent fight. Each bot has different characteristics that govern the way it fights. The portly biker chick Lucy tends to duck a lot. Xaero, a Zen master and the final boss of the single-player mode, is ... master of the railgun.
Design wise, Quake III Arena is a mixed bag. Out of the 26 deathmatch and Capture the Flag levels, there's only a handful of memorable maps; many seem like half-hearted attempts at best. While the overall look is gorgeous, the four futuristic base-type maps feature high r-speeds (which effect your overall frames per second) with ugly textures and bland design. Additionally, the four void maps feature boring black backdrops with floating platforms -- there's little innovation or inspiration here.

Team Arena shifts the focus of Quake III away from the deathmatch and onto Team playing. You can select different teams to be members of, and choose from 12 new levels to do battle on.

The Alliance Games Downloads Page now offers a new version 3.0 of Alliance, their Quake III Arena modification. Alliance offers an off (non-weapon) hand grappling hook, and, as noted on their features page: "It can be played as 1 vs. 1Tourney, FFA Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag or Hold the Flag (Our own invention). Alliance includes an array of custom models and sounds, admin and referee features, plus the best damn bots in any FPS ever."
